Introduction to the Sun Salutation (Surya Namaskar)

6 week course on the Sun Salutation, central to many yoga classes, broken down for beginners, but can be practiced by anyone, to get back to basics!

Part 1

Week 1 of the 6 week course, introducing concepts of the sun salutation and building up to the practice, which can include variations for everyone. This is a level 1 class, and 75 minutes long.

 
 

Part 2

Part 2 of the 6 week course, building up to the Surya Namaskar practice. We use a cushion in this class, and focus on moving from one posture to another on the breath, building on our transitions. This is 75 minutes long and suitable for all levels.

Part 3

This is the 3rd class, working towards the classical sun salutation. You will need a cushion for the class, and it is 75 minutes long.

 
 

Sun Salutation Part 4

Still working on those transitions for the sun salutation! Bringing the foot back and forward and going from table to the floor are the tricky parts, and can take a bit of practice. We focus on the muscles that are used for these and get them mobilised. The class is 70 minutes and you will need a strap and cushion.

 

Part 5

Continuing on with our preparation for the sun salutation, you will need a cushion and some wall space in this 75 minute class. The sun salutation has 24 movements, and we build up to 16 here.

Sun Salutation Part 6

The final sun salutation class, and we do a variation on our backs, before doing the full practice. This is suitable for beginners, so it is at a slower pace. You can use a cushion for the lunges. 75 minutes.
